APARTMENT IN TRASTEVERE: LIVING LIKE A ROMAN

When planning our trip to Rome I opted for an Airbnb as there was such a large selection of affordable and beautiful apartments to choose from. After researching different neighbourhoods I decided on Trastevere as our base and I am so glad I did. Although Trastevere is gaining popularity and may not be the hidden gem it once was, it is an oasis away from the crowds of tourists. Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with ancient pastel coloured buildings dripping with ivy, and lots of cafes, shops, and restaurants as well.

There are several hotels to choose from in Rome but the Trastevere neighbourhood in particular offers a large selection of affordable yet beautiful Airbnb apartments. Our apartment was the perfect combination of modern and historic charm with its brick arch and renovated kitchen/bathroom. European hotel rooms are notoriously small so it was nice to be able to have space to go through both of our suitcases. Space-wise we were spoiled with this apartment (it had 3 floors!) - The bedroom on the top floor, The/living room/ kitchen/bathroom on the main floor, and an additional living room with a pullout couch and a laundry room in the basement.

Walking distance from our Airbnb was a restaurant called Da Enzo, famous for its Cacio e Pepe (a must-have pasta dish if you're in Italy) . Despite its modest decor and limited seating it is very popular so I made a reservation ahead of time.  Our last night in Rome we treated ourselves to a Michelin quality meal at this restaurant which also happened to be just south of Trastevere. A few of my other favourite spots in Trastevere are Le Levain for desserts, Fior Di Luna and Fatamorgana for gelato, and I Supplì for street food including delicious supplì (fried rice balls stuffed with mozzarella) one of Rome’s most popular street foods.

When visiting Rome there is so much to see but Trastevere is one place that shouldn't be missed. Escape the masses for a few hours and get lost in the winding lanes and hidden corners of this captivating neighbourhood.
